What is it?

RTX 4090 48GB Overview

Our RTX 4090 48GB upgrade utilizes authentic full-performance AD102-300-A1 cores—the same top-tier consumer specification used in US/EU RTX 4090 cards. Unlike competing offerings that often use lower performing Chinese market variants (RTX 4090-D with AD102-250-A1 cores), our upgrades boast the use of full variant AD102-300-A1 4090 cores. Zero performance compromises.

Memory architecture follows NVIDIA's original design specifications, utilizing Micron OEM-certified GDDR6X modules to preserve the full real world 900 GB/s bandwidth. Our implementation leverages NVIDIA engineering resources and industry-standard high speed PCB design practices to ensure optimal signal integrity across the entire memory subsystem, GPU core, and PCIe interface.

Power delivery utilizes an 18-phase design with BLN3 power stages (55A each), providing robust 450W TGP capability for sustained full-load operation. This power architecture ensures stable performance under the most demanding AI and machine learning workloads in your production enviroment.

The cooling solution features a dual-slot form factor identical to professional A6000/A100 cards, designed for high-density rack installations. The robust thermal management system combines substantial thermal mass with a precision double-bearing delta fan, delivering exceptional cooling performance in professional server environments.

Our thermal interface optimization employs Honeywell PTM7950 phase-change material, providing superior heat transfer characteristics compared to traditional thermal paste. This ensures consistent and long lasting thermal performance while maintaining the GPU's original specifications throughout extended operation cycles.

Key findings

  • Upgrading to 48GB VRAM does not impact memory performance or latency
  • Ability to run 70B models that don't fit in 24GB - All within a single dual slot card
  • Slightly lower latency across all workloads

The 48GB mod's main advantages are:

  • Double the VRAM. Larger VRAM capacity for multi-tennant small-model LLM inferencing, or large model interencing/training with clusters of 4090's (48*8 = 384GB, or 48*4 = 192GB GDDR6X VRAM). Typically when it comes to Ai, its not compute power, but vram capacity that is the limitation for all Ai research right now.
  • Ability to pack cards densely within a computer or server rack, utilizing standard optimized motherboard x16 pcie slot spacing (typically x16 slots are spaced 2 slots apart) - you want to use x16 slots for full bandwidth to your GPU's between each GPU and/or your CPU.

Understanding the Performance Metrics

The point of this upgrade is to take bulky multi slot 4090's and make them density-friendly. We double the vram and see no performance degredation compared to a stock 4090 across AI workloads.

The increased memory capacity from 24 to 48Gb allows for larger batch sizes, reduced memory swapping, and the ability to train larger models that would otherwise require model sharding or quantization.

The 4090 blows the A6000 out of the water- its simply a newer generation. But you get the same 2 slot form factor, and 2u server compatibility. This optimized 4090 allows your team to work with cutting-edge models that push the boundaries of what's possible with budget concious scalable hardware.

So where's the catch?

We believe in complete transparency. Here are the trade-offs you should know about:

Louder Operation

The industrial delta fan is more audible than consumer cards. At load, it will put out upto 70-80 dB (similar to city traffic or loud radio). Not ideal for quiet home offices, but perfect for server environments, back rooms, or basements.

No NV-Link

The 40 series 4090, nor the 48gb variant we upgrade to does not come with NV-link. Nvidia had dropped NV-link on consumer cards after the 30 series. NV-link provides higher bandwidth between clusters of cards. Without it the 4090's it means you must rely on x16 pcie gen 4 bus speeds (64GB/s) for inter-card communication in high density cluster deployments.

Voided Warranty

Upgrading your 4090 voids your official Nvidia warranty. Nvidia offers a 3-year limited warranty on their consumer/datacenter GPU's. We provide a comprehensive 90-day warranty post-upgrade, with reasonably priced extended warranty options available up to 1 year for additional peace of mind.

The Bottom Line

These modifications are optimized for professional AI/ML workloads in development and production environments where performance and density matter more than consumer conveniences.
